Today's Disciples: The Essential Role of the Laity in the Church

Catholics are coming alive, like never before, to the fact that we are called be God to know and live our faith.  We are hungering to know more about our faith and are searching for materials and adult faith enrichment programs that inspire, inform, and equip us to do the work that God has called us to do.

Never before in the history of the Church has the essential role of the layperson been so dramatically emphasized as it is now.  Particularly since Vatican II, the Church has called for a renewal in the life and role of the laity.

Yet, for many of us we don't understand what that means.  It sounds right and like something that needs to happen, but we really don't understand what it is we're supposed to be doing.  To be able to fulfill our important role in the Church, we must more clearly understand the Church's teaching on laity.

• laypeople are called to engage in the affairs of the world and direct them according to God's will,
