Henle Latin, First Year

Humanistic insight and linguistic training are the goals of this integrated four-year Latin course.  Time-tested and teacher endorsed, this comprehensive program is designed to lead the student systematically through the fundamentals of the language itself and on to an appreciation of selected classic texts.

Originally published in 1945, the Henle Latin Series teaches Latin the traditional way. For students who have completed Latina Christiana I and II, Henle's First Year Latin may be started as early as 5th or 6th grade. It can also be attempted by students with no Latin background as early as 7th grade. In the Henle Series, grammar and syntax are collected into a separate 250 page Grammar Manual, which is used as a handy reference to accompany all four years of Henle. The Henle texts contain all of the exercises and readings. In the First Year text a limited vocabulary of 500 words allows students to master grammar without being overwhelmed with a large vocabulary. The book offers many repetitious Latin phrases and copious exercises, using a mixture of Christian and classical content. Exercises and readings teach Roman and American history and the difference between the pagan and Christian world views, between the virtues of the natural man (of whom the Roman was the greatest type) and the virtues of the Christian man which are possible only through grace.
