Synopsis

BEAUTIFUL Catholic Reader for 3rd-4th Students

Evaluator Comments

This set of Catholic readers will take a child through primer through 8th grade reading level. The stories are captivating for children of the appropriate ages and include such topics as Scripture narratives, following the adventures of a Catholic family as they grow and learn in the grace of God (early books), missionaries in China and other places, Church history, American stories, riddles at appropriate ages, and more. This series is very comprehensive in its scope and sequence and should be found on every Catholic family's bookshelves, whether as a supplement or as a core reading program.

The hard-bound, red-cover set the stone that these are treasures - and they truly are. Pictures are black and white drawings and lend themselves well to enhancing the story without distracting from it. The focus here is on reading an enjoyable story.

In this book (four), children are provided with an introduction written specifically for them on the topics of reading aloud and reading silently, the benefits and needs of both and how each should be utitlized in the stories the book contains (and in general life); this book also introduces a glossary with pronunciation and definitions.

Those who have not read books primer through 3 will not feel they have missed anything, provided they have had a solid reading program that puts them at advanced 3rd grade or higher reading level. My son who is 6 and reading at a 3rd grade reading level has little problem reading these books - just in learning the new words (assisted by the included glossary).

True to form within the others books, the topic range is wide in this book of 53 stories - ranging from American history, Catholic missions, saints' stories, Scripture narratives (including both Old and New Testaments), as well as moral tales.

No Catholic child is likely to be disappointed by the stories within this book!
