From the official website for Our Lady of Guadalupe: Mother of the Civilization of Love:In Our Lady of Guadalupe: Mother of the Civilization of Love, Mr. Anderson & Msgr. Chávez trace the history of Our Lady of Guadalupe from the sixteenth century to the present and discuss how her message was and continues to be an important catalyst for religious and cultural transformation. Looking at Our Lady of Guadalupe as a model of the Church and Juan Diego as a model for all Christians, the authors explore the changing face of the Catholic Church. They show how Our Lady of Guadalupe's message was not only historically significant, but how it speaks to contemporary issues confronting the American continents and people today.
The text above is not a far cry from the contents of the book. The writing flows well and does not drift. The authors masterfully provide an in-depth analysis of the Holy image on the tilma and decodes the codex for those if us in the present by showing us the significance of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe to the Aztecs.
From beginning to end, the authors give us a rich and heavily footnoted account of the miraculous apparition and how Mary's appearance helped to convert millions thus saving lives and souls - both native and foreign. What is most interesting is how Our Blessed Mother speaks to us today through an image so divinely rooted that it is in an of itself a tome in the Nahuatl language.
Authors Supreme Knight (of Columbus) Carl Anderson and Msgr. Eduardo Chavez (postulator of the cause of St. Juan Diego) do a masterful job of pointing our the elements of the Tilma and how they speak directly to Aztecs such as the use of flowers and the fact that Mary is pregnant with Our Blessed Lord. But the examination does not focus solely on the image. The authors go over every detail from Mary selecting St. Jose Diego as her messenger to the healing of his uncle; from the initial doubt of Bishop Fray Juan de Zumárraga to his immediate recognition once eyes were blessed to see the image; from the conversion of Natives to the continual and pivotal role Our Lady play here in all of the Americas.
As an added treat, the authors included in Appendix A the Nican Mopohua (penned by Antonio Valeriano) which was most likely written prior to the death of St. Juan Diego and details these events.
The entire book is a trip through relevant and living history of the Church in America providing us with hope and reminding us that to know Mary, who always says to us, "Do whatever he tells you" (John (RSV) 2:5), is best and most sure way to know her Son.
