Catholic Review of: Rediscovering Catholicism

When I first received this book as a gift my first thought was, based on reading the title, "Great! A book that will help me understand the teachings of the Catholic faith." Boy was I wrong. This book does not explain the doctrines of our faith and how we should live them out. This book asks its readers to look deep within their souls to gain an understanding of how they are living their lives...and how they should live their lives. It is through living our lives as Christ wants us to that we come to a better understanding of our Catholic faith and "Rediscover Catholicism".

This book took a hold of my heart and told me that I needed to reorient my life. Our society is surrounded by individualism, hedonism, and minimalism and in order to understand and "rediscover" our Catholic faith we need to reject these modern philosophies. Matthew Kelly starts with the premise that Catholicism is not a set of rules and guidelines, but a way of life. Many Catholics are disillusioned wtih their faith. Kelly starts the book asking us to look at ourselves and how we are living our lives. He starts from the self.

After spending some time in the book explaining how we need to live our lives as individuals, Kelly then moves on to the major premises of the Catholic faith. He explains in easy to understand language that the Catholic Church holds the Truth's we are all seeking.

I was extremely impressed with what Matthew Kelly has to say in this book, so much so that, as a Catholic youth minister, I am using this book as part of my high school youth ministry curriculum during this upcoming year. If you want a deeper understanding on life and your faith, then you need to read this book!
