Synopsis

A good read, but a little dry

Evaluator Comments

Everyone needs to grow in virtue. It does not matter if you are a guy or a girl, you just need to grow in virtue, and that is what A Guy's Guide to the Good Life: Virtues for Men is designed to do. Oftentimes guys don't seem to think that they need virtue. They think that they are too macho to live virtuous lives. Robert Lockwood is a man's man and tells it like it is. He explains to his readers not only the need to live virtuous lives, but also give practical advice on how to live out a virtuous life.

Lockwood takes each of the seven virtues (prudence, fortitude, temperence, justice, faith, hope, and charity) and shares with his readers stories from his life that really connect with men. The book is broken up into two sections. The first section discusses the cardinal virtues (prudence, fortitude, temperance and justice) and the second half discusses the theological virtues (faith, hope, and charity).

Lockwood does an excellent job at discussing what the virtues mean. He also does a good job at stressing to the guys that read this book the need to pursue a virtuous life. Where this book lacks is in its story telling. I recently read another book on virtues geared toward men and that author did a much better job at telling stories that attract men. Maybe this is why I don't see Lockwood as a good story teller in comparison to the other book I read. If I had read Lockwood's book first, then I may have had a different opinion of his book.

Overall, this is a good book. If you can get past the dry story telling then you will gain a lot from his knowledge of the virtues. I would recommend this book to anyone who is seeking to grow in virtues, male or female.
