Synopsis
The Pope's Latest Encyclical
Evaluator Comments
This is the latest encyclical written by the Pope, which is a letter he writes to the world every year or two. It deals specifically with the relationship between justice and truth, which is incredibly interesting, to say the least. His main point was that all acts of justice and progress are intertwined, and must be based on the truth of the value and dignity of every living thing: your concern for the environment is directly related to your value of unborn life, your care for developing nations is directly related to your belief in the gifts that the poor have to offer the world.
He cites the distinct gap between those who love truth but aren't engaged in acts of justice with those who fight for justice but have no real reason why. He also skirts around the issues of the current financial crisis by alluding to previous encyclicals on human progress and the dignity of work.
This is a very challenging read, but well worth it. I had to read many sections multiple times to even grasp the material at a basic level. The encyclicals of Benedict XVI are every bit as dense as encyclicals from past popes, but this one has an especially academic tone to it. The entire encyclical requires deep thought and serious reading in order to grasp the point that Pope Benedict it trying to make. The material is definitely not for someone looking for some light Christian reading.
