Synopsis

Animated Rosary for Kids will have your kids asking to pray the rosary

Evaluator Comments

For Catholic parents everywhere, finding orthodox TV programs to occupy the little ones is an exercise in frustration. EWTN has done a great job narrowing that void with several shows for children, and its Animated Rosary for Kids, available on DVD, is one of our family’s favorites. It has distracted my kiddos (5, 3 and 2) many a desperate evening while I have thrown dinner together.

Clearly, however, my main concern being that the children learn something, I have been very pleased with the content and presentation. All twenty mysteries are represented, and each one includes a brief explanation, an Our Father, a Hail Mary and a Glory Be. Each mystery is described so children can relate to it. The Visitation, for example, is accompanied by a suggestion that children try to help out around their own homes like Mary helped Elizabeth. The Sorrowful Mysteries are also presented in a very kid-friendly way. Even sensitive children will be able to handle the crucifixion and events leading up to it. The scourging, for example, is alluded to by shadows; there’s no blood or violence.

My one complaint is the fast pace of the songs and prayers. They need to move along at a decent clip to hold children’s attention, but the prayers are recited too quickly to keep up. The words should be clear and audible, but at times they’re hard to discern without really concentrating.

Other than that, a few oddities are worth noting. The angel who narrates the program has the chubby body and powder-blue PJs of a baby, but his grown-up hairdo is straight from the ‘80s. The voice of God the Father sounds aristocratic and kind of stodgy, which happens to not be quite how I imagine Him. And Mary looks more Hollywood than holy, with full lips and eyes that look made-up.

Still, though, a rosary DVD tailor-made for children seems almost too good to be true. It’s hard to argue with a show that teaches children to pray the way our Blessed Mother asked us to. When there’s such a dearth of Catholic programming out there for the younger crowd, this DVD is indeed a blessing. I recommend buying it not only for its own value, but to support EWTN in hopes of more Catholic videos being produced.

The show lasts about 80 minutes.
