Synopsis

Great for both the spiritual novice and seasoned practitioner.

Evaluator Comments

Prayer and the Will of God by Dom Hubert van Zeller is a very direct discussion that both the spiritual 'novice' and 'seasoned practitioner' could benefit from. The book is divided into two parts that work together and also stand alone.

The first part of the book is all about prayer. Why should we pray? How should we pray? What parts do the recited prayers and the Bible play? All of these things are covered in the beginning. One of my favorite parts in this first section is the piece that focuses on distraction and prayer. There is often something else going on that creates distraction during prayer and this book offered wonderful insight into this issue. Distractions are expected in life and that is ok. How they affect your prayer has to do with how you deal with them.

The second part talks about the will of God. What is it? How do we respond to it? How do we find it in our own lives? How do we accept it when it's not in line with our own will? At a time in my life that is full of stress and questions this section was perfect. The part that covers the will of God in the lives of Saints was great. I love knowing that the Saints struggled with finding and accepting God's will in their lives. The second half of this book is the reason I am going to hand it to my husband and pray he reads it. I think he would benefit from the first part, but this second part is the harder one for both of us. Finding and accepting God's will is not easy for either of us, but this book helped me find some peace and guidance in that. I believe it will do the same for him and anyone else who reads this wonderful book.

While I was reading it felt like I was being gentle taught. I had plenty of "ah-ha!" moments and lots of nodding, smiling, and "mmhmm-ing" along the way. The best I can compare it to is when you are in the kitchen with an older relative, like Grandma, preparing a holiday meal. While you're in the kitchen Grandma shares her recipes, little tricks of the trade, and life lessons all while having a relaxing time.

This book was just what I needed to help me learn more and go deeper into my faith and my understanding of prayer and God's will. I highly recommend it.
