Did Jesus Have a Last Name?
is a follow-up to Matthew Pinto's first volume of questions and answers from teenagers about Catholicism, Did Adam & Eve Have Belly Buttons
? This time around, Pinto is joined by Jason Evert, and the two authors combine their extensive experience in spreading the Gospel to young men and women. The chapters are divided into the same twelve topics as in the previous volume, which makes this a nice companion to Adam & Eve
or a stand-alone book to have as a resource.
This book is helpful in outlining the essential components of a good response to each of the 200 questions. For example, the question "After a Catholic couple gets married in the Church, can they ever re-marry" merits a two-page overview of the annulment process, discussing the three components of marriage (consent, form, and capacity) and what their significance is to the sacrament. Several more questions about Catholic doctrine on the sacrament of marriage follow, with succinct but informative answers. Pinto and Evert have chosen questions that represent the real struggles many have in understanding the teachings of the Church.
Sometimes, the questions that come up in class are so complex that it's hard to give a really good answer. This book isn't designed to be the Only Book You'll Need in those situations. The question "What are some of the differences between Islam and Christianity" gets a decent one-page response, with a recommendation for further reading, but it's obvious that the question is a big one and can't be easily summed up in a couple of paragraphs. What Pinto and Evert do is to give a launching-off point for the discussion that is faithful to the Magisterium and gets to the heart of the matter.
This book, like its companion volume, would be a great gift for Confirmation or RCIA. It's very useful for those who teach young people and those considering conversion, because it helps identify questions that will probably come up in class. It is cross-referenced with both Scripture and the Catechism, so those whose curiosity is piqued by the book will know just where to go to get more information.
