I first considered using this Bible study when I was looking for a program to use with my young adult group. I was attracted to it because it uses video (or just CDs) as well as group discussion. I was a little shocked by the price at the time, but since it completely changed the way I think of the Bible it was completely worth the expense. Prior to Jeff Cavin's lectures I had the attitude of St. Augustine towards the Holy Scriptures. "They appeared to me to be unworthy compared to the diginity of Tully; for my inflated pride shrunk from their humble style, and my sharp mind could not pierce their inner meaning." (Conf. 3:5) The Great Adventure Bible Timeline series not only showed how the Bible is MY story, it also proved to me that it is an incredible piece of literature worthy of its Divine author. I now read my Bible regularly and understand the context of the readings at Mass.
The program is divided into 24 sessions which go through the 14 narrative books of the Bible and include some supplemental reading of the other books. This means that you will be reading the actual story in the Bible. Jeff Cavins jokes about the many Catholics he's met who wanted to read the Bible cover-to-cover but quit once they got to Leviticus. The organization of this program insures that you read large parts of the Bible without losing sight of the big picture.
Jeff Cavins does a wonderful job presenting the Bible in a relevant way. He uses the Scriptures to teach Catholic doctrine and Tradition while showing God's unbroken love and mercy in the Old and New Testaments. His humor keeps the hour-long lectures interesting and he builds up to the end of the hour in a way that left me saying "wow" after it was over. I watched many of the lectures two or three times.
Aside from the $400 price tag (plus study materials), there are very few drawbacks to this program. We lost a couple participants because they did not like sitting through an hour-long lecture at the end of the day. The other thing to note is that the study is now in its third generation, but the video shows the original materials which include matching crayons (or pencils) that aren't available anymore. This is not a big deal, but some participants asked me about it and I had to research the answer.
This is an excellent option for group or private Bible studies and it is especially easy on the facilitators. I was a first time leader and I felt comfortable in that position because the lectures were recorded, the questions and answers were available in the leader's set and there were even prayers that came with the materials that I could use for whichever time period we were studying. This is a real six-star item.
