Synopsis

The Devil is real and so is the need for exorcism.

Evaluator Comments

Despite what society tries to tell us these days, the devil is a real and an immediate threat to our eternal salvation. This fact is not only evident in the evils present in society, but also in the events that don't come out in the open. In An Exorcist Tells His Story, Fr. Amorth presents this truth with explanations and examples that show the real side of the devil.

Fr. Amorth starts with an explanation of the centrality of Christ and Satan's relationship to it, explaining that, to understand the need for exorcisms, it is important to understand what the devil's goal is. He then continues with an explanation of the power of Satan, with examples and description of the different types of harm that the devil can cause humans, and what the reasons are of why a person might be possessed. He then gives an explanation of how the exorcist figures out if a person is really possessed, and how the exorcism works. The last chapters talk about the dangers of witchcraft and the occult, false healers, and curses. He concludes with a call to bishops and priests to recognize that the devil is real, as is the need for exorcism, and that the Church needs to address this issue a lot more.

When I first read this book, I had heard a bit about the occult and the dangers associated. However, after I read this book, I understood a little more why it was dangerous. I also realized how dangerous it was not to believe in the devil, because he is a real and immediate threat. I found this book to be very informative, and scary at the same time. It has caused me to have a greater understanding of the importance of the sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Confession.
